It’s sadly true: because of climate change, wildfires are a fact of life in Oregon. And because more and more people live in or next to “wildland urban interfaces”, more and more people will have to face them or their consequences every year.
But the good news is: knowing they will happen, we can take concrete steps to anticipate them. Whether that’s making your home and landscape ‘defensible’, having a plan to evacuate, or simply deal with downwind smoke, there are strategies and programs to help.
That’s the driving force behind Wildfire-Ready Oregon, a project of 1000 Friends of Oregon to help all Oregonians make sure they’re ready and resilient in the face of a more flammable planet.
To ensure this critical information got into as many hands as possible, I recommended avoiding divisive buzzwords and focusing instead on the facts, what they mean for you, and what you can do about it to keep you and your family safe.
